Amba – Oakland, CA

by admin on February 10, 2010

Let’s be honest, most falafel places are dives. Although the food may be good, they aren’t the kind of places that you would usually take a business associate for lunch. That is where Amba located in Oakland, CA is different. Although it’s not a Michelin Star place, it is the antithesis of most falafel places. It is clean, well lit and the food is out of this world. Let’s start with the hummus, it was wonderful  and even had some techina in the center of the hummus. The pita bread while not made there was put on to a grill to warm up and it made the bread warm and crispy and perfect to dip into the hummus. Let me also point out that once you order your food at the front you don’t have to wait around and then take your food to a table, they will bring the food to you. I found that to be a very nice touch.

The next course was the falafel and it was falafel. I like mine a little extra spicy and they didn’t disappoint. They even put some hot peppers (along with some pickles) on the side for me.  As a side dish I had some french fries and they seemed to be of the home made variety. They were a good thickness and fried to just a perfect consistency.

For dessert I had a cookie that was home made and so soft that it just melted in your mouth.

The prices were very good and in range for a place like this. Overall it was a great place to have some good falafel.
